Nutmeg

The seed of a fruit of an evergreen tree, nutmeg is spicy, warm, sweet and pungent. The kernels have been successfully used in the treatment of Crohn’s disease while the essential oil is known to help aching gums. Good in mincemeat, ice cream and baked goods. Nutmeg and mace both contain myristicin and elemicin which have mild sedative and anaesthetic properties and which in large amounts are poisonous. Nutmeg also contains substances which are hallucinogenic. For both reasons nutmeg should therefore be used in very small quantities.
